Film Editing Software - Best Film Editing Softwares for Mac & PC
75
You need a really good film editing software that suites your needs and that's the reason you're here right?
I will give some tips on the best programs that even the pro's use, and as a matter of fact.. You don't need to be a rocketscientist to use them..
I mean you could have shot some amazing film material, but if the editing isn't good it all falls flat.
There are some great film editing programs for macs and there are great film editing programs for PC..
It's all comes down to a matter of style and personal taste. I personally like Macs because they are made for video and image work. PCs are much more allround..
Plus with a Mac, you can run PC programs by using a program called Paralells Desktop.
OK so which program should you use?
Well there are 3 major players that I want to introduce you to, but first I'd like to talk a little about the programs that comes with your computer.
If you have a mac you might already be familliar with a program called iMovie. It's one of the programs that are included with the iWorks package..
This program is good I guess if you are just starting out and editing your smaller family movies. However, you will outgrow this program fast.
The same goes for the program "Windows movie maker" which comes with almost every PC these days. It's also one of those programs that will reach its limit fast and you will end up wanting another program.
Adobe, the First of 3 Major Players
The programs that comes with your computer will do for the amatuer film maker / film editer, but eventually you would want to get programs that can do more, and have more choices.
If you want to take editing to the next level.. you should really check out the beginner adobe products.
Sure "Windows movie maker" and the Mac's iMovie are a good start, but they cannot match up with beginner adobe products.
The program from adobe you should be on the lookout for is called "Adobe Premiere Elements 4" and it's a fantastic software. To bad it only supports Windows.
It's perfect if you are still learning the ropes of editing and it's not so expensive. It costs $99.99 if you buy it directly from adobe.com.
Then if you know what you are doing and want more choices, adobe has a product called Adobe Creative Suite 3 Production Premium. This program is available for both PC and MACs
This software is a little more advanced. You are now entering the level of which some of the contributions to the Sundance Film festival are using for film editing.
For example: Superman Returns, U2 3D, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Orange County Choppers and "The Aviator" are some of the big movies who used Adobe for editing and special effects..
There are manly two products in the above software that are worth mentioning a little bit extra.
They are:
Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 and Adobe After Effects CS3 Professional.
These two are really good if you are trying to go from beginner to advanced. The learning curve is a little longer with these two but once you've learned how to use them you can do much more than the beginner Adobe Premier Elements.
Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 costs $799
Adobe After Effects CS3 Professional costs $999
However, You can get a free 30 day trial of any of these softwares.
These two above are among the softwares that are included in the Adobe Creative Suite 3 Production Premium. However it's a little more expensiver..
Creative Suite 3 Production Premium costs $1,699

Great Film Editing Software From Sony
Believe it! Sony has actually made a very good and easy to use film editing program. They have made a software for the mainstream market and it's great news for you..
You don't need to be an expert in the field to use the program. The software is called Sony Vegas Movie Studio and it's in the same class as Adobe Premiere Elemens. It's a good software to get started with and learn the ropes of film editing.
Sony Vegas Movie Studio is easier to pick up than Adobe Premiere Elements.
The software is quite cheap if you compare it to other film editing softwares in the business. $74.95 for the standard editon, $114.95 for the platinum edition and $549.95 for the pro version.
However you can get a free 30 day trial with this software..
This software comes for windows XP and Vista only.. To bad if you are a Mac user because this software is pretty good.

Good Info. This helped me to better understand what film editing software is availible currently, Than you
I am working on a documentary which is about the Trail of Tears. With over thirty hours of footage I need the best product at the lowest price. Also, I have never edited a documentary bnefore. Could you advise me as to the best product to use. I do have a basic understanding of editing and have piddled with Windows Movie Maker to realize its simplicity. I don't feel I have to have an editing system with all the "bells & whistles" but do need to produce a professional quality product. Thank you for your time. Your sight is very helpful

gre8 info.. thanx dear
I am starting in the business and this is great advice. Thanks so much for the info.
This information is very deeply.
thanks friend
iMovie is part of the iLife package, and iWork (not iWorks) is a separate suite that is not included with all Macs.
I'm now getting started so i really want the best editing programme but cheap price and not expensive one because i don't have a lot of money.
Aimersoft DVD Converter Suite for Mac is the most powerful Mac DVD and video Converter software that include two almighty Mac converters: Aimersoft DVD Ripper for Mac and Aimersoft Video Converter for Mac.
Sony Vegas Pro is also an excellent video editing program. In my opinion, it's better than Vegas Movie Studio.
Very good advice.
this softer are very good perfourm in my pc
im a user of vegas pro and adobe pe and in my opinion iwould have to say for a beginner vegas is a good way to go because its the cheaper of the trhee and its just as powerful as the others with almost the same additional plug ins im a beginner myself im a little over 2 years now and it was a great start for me feel free to checkout some of my work coming soon www.image1.oom
I do a lot of video editting especially for weddings. thanks for the tip. will make my projects look like a hollywood film production
Great advise I will be looking in to the final cut studio 2 soft ware.
Sony Vegas Pro is top notch. Easy to use. Never crashes. Can handle any file/format you throw at it. Lots of awesome 3rd party plugins available. Having used the Adobe products, I would highly recommend anyone to switch to Sony.
you mentioned that in final cut pro you can edit the soundtracks, can you do that in the sony program as well.
we will be doing a public access kids tv show and i have access to final cut pro at studio, but i wanted something for home. It will have the elements of a Lizzy Mcquire type show with little animated character narrating thru-out the show, is this something that I can do on the sony program? I have a pc, i was told there is a pc version of final cut pro but haven't found it. is there one?
DO NOT BUY ADOBE PREMIERE!!!, especially any of the premiere pros, they are RUBBISH!!!, so many bugs and lags, timeouts, unnesscary use of ram, crashes and unsupporting of usual file types, import issues, screw you adobe.
Final cut pro is the best.
Final Cut Pro is by far is the best it's worth every cent. I advise any new comers into the industry to purchase Final Cut Studio (2009). This comes with, Final Cut Pro 7, DVD Studio Pro 4, Motion 4, Soundtrack Pro 3, Color 1.5, Compressor 3.5. Then just watch a load of tutorials to know your way around the programs. Take these rules to help you
* "Rule 1: Never make a cut without a positive reason."
* "Rule 2: When undecided about the exact frame to cut on, cut long rather than short."
* "Rule 3: Whenever possible cut 'in movement'."
* "Rule 4: The 'fresh' is preferable to the 'stale'."
* "Rule 5: All scenes should begin and end with continuing action."
* "Rule 6: Cut for proper values rather than proper 'matches'."
* "Rule 7: Substance first—then form."
Coming from a movie/documentary editor myself.
final cut is the best software for film editing and best telecasting software and best reselling software
Thank you for an informative site. I have just purchased Sony Pro 10 after weighing up the options. I have edited on Premier pro in the past and found it crashes. I wanted an aplle Mac and final cut studio but could'nt afford it. The Pro 10 has just been released, and for PC it matches Final Cut but is selling at better price for proffessional editing. Iam going to be editing experimental art films, so want a fluid interface with choices in cutting and effects. Thanks to Pablo for cutting tips.
Come on this is full of grammatical errors, learn English people. "This software comes for windows XP and Vista only.. To bad if you are a Mac user because this software is pretty good. " You used the wrong "Too" and with two periods is nether the end of a sentence nor a continuation.
as good
i hav searched for such info as this on the web in vain. thanx. bravo, and also,......... speechless.
This information is very useful. very good advice
Thanks
